Progress is happening faster than we realize. It’s changing our lives and making them easier. Architecture is no exception. Yesterday, measuring space before internal construction using traditional methods like rulers or tape seemed sufficient. However, today, we aim for greater precision and time savings in data collection. Projects are becoming increasingly complex. Our company, SCAN M2, has created an extraordinary service that allows for space scanning and the rapid, precise, and understandable creation of projects. Check out the details on our website 👉SCAN M2.

What is 3D laser scanning?

3D laser scanning is a technology that enables gathering accurate information about the shape and surface of an object using lasers. This process involves scanning the environment or objects using a laser beam. The scanner then creates several point clouds based on the data, allowing, through specialized computer software, the creation of a three-dimensional copy of the scanned object.

Example of a situation requiring increased points

When scanning a monument with many intricate elements, maintaining the figure’s accuracy with all its details for effective restoration is crucial. Setting the scanning point count to 16 million results in less point density than 32, 64, or a higher million-point count. However, scanning precision remains the same, maintaining a distance accuracy of 1 mm (0.04’’). But with a higher point count, we gather more information about the scanned figure, densifying it with points, as over time, micron irregularities may appear on its surface, worth considering to preserve historical significance ☝️.

Now, Let’s compare!

Let’s say we have a 10-story building, maybe a hospital undergoing interior renovations. The building has just been completed and is empty inside.
Scanning an average-looking building at first glance may take several days. Traditional methods like a laser ruler or ordinary methods of measurement could take several months or even fail. Additionally, the accuracy of the collected information decreases, requiring additional adjustments. Remember ☝️ time is money, and precision is time!

We can now identify the advantages of 3D laser scanning

Speed

Perfect for enormous spaces but also works well in smaller ones. Let’s assume this is already established in our minds a-priori.

Precision

Our 3D laser scanning achieves 1 mm (0.04’’) precision. In the future, we’ll share an interesting and somewhat anecdotal situation that happened to us in France during scanning but proved to everyone that the technology we sell is THE BEST 👍!

One or a few people for gigantic objects

One person or a few people are enough to scan even gigantic objects.

Highlighting the most important advantage of 3D laser scanning!

Scan the space once in France, and we can develop the entire project in Poland. There’s no need to travel more and spend money on flights, allowing for the hiring of high intellectual minds in a country where prices are significantly lower, and the cost for the entire service will be lower.

Applications of 3D laser scanning

3D laser scanning finds applications in various fields:

  • Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Geodesy
  • Medicine
  • Film Industry

And also in areas related to the preservation of cultural heritage. It’s an effective method of obtaining accurate three-dimensional measurements of objects and the environment.
